Wayne R. Griswold, PE, CFPS
principal fire protection engineer
As a principal at TERPconsulting, Wayne leads the firm’s Colorado operations and serves as a technical lead. Using his 18 years of experience in fire protection engineering, Wayne actively develops bespoke solutions to complex client problems. He is well-versed in design, consulting, hazmat, etc., with specialties in commissioning/testing complex fire/life safety systems, code consulting, and litigation. Wayne has also worked as an AHJ across multiple scopes, emphasizing the importance of a knowledgeable fire department for design enforcement and implementation.
One of Wayne’s career pinnacles was designing a smoke control system and aiding in performing fire modeling simulations for the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Saudi Arabia, a complex project due to its unique architecture. Wayne also cites the challenge of conducting fire/life safety systems design, certification, and testing services at Denver International Airport while it was a working facility. Another career achievement for Wayne was working on Children’s Hospital Colorado, where he performed multiple scopes, including establishing the design criteria of the facility’s fire/life safety system, performing building/fire code consulting, reviewing IBC/NFPA 101 compliance, and commissioning systems testing and certification.
In 2025, Wayne was appointed by the Colorado State Fire Chiefs to serve on the Technical Advisory Committee for Senate Bill 25-002: Regional Building Codes for Factory-Built Structures. Signed into law by the Colorado General Assembly in May 2025, this legislation supports the development of regionally tailored building codes that account for local climatic and geographic conditions for both residential and non-residential factory-built structures.
Wayne is a registered fire protection professional engineer (PE) in Colorado, New Mexico, and Wisconsin, a Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) as recognized by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and certified by the Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE). He is secretary of the 2025-26 SFPE-Rocky Mountain Chapter, serves on the Regional Fire Code Board of Appeals for the South Metro Fire Rescue Authority (SMFRA), the Denver Fire Code Committee, and NFPA Standards Committees 3, 4, and 915.
