INDUSTRY VETERAN ROB SONTAG JOINS TERPconsulting

Robert Sontag joins TERPconsulting

Rob Sontag, CFPS, FM, CFPE, CFI-II, CFEI, EFO has joined TERPconsulting as a senior fire protection consultant in the company’s Denver office. He has amassed more than 25 years of knowledge and expertise working with building systems, fire protection, and firefighting in Colorado.

“With the wealth of industry experience and expertise Rob has accumulated over the last two decades the team at TERPconsulting is very fortunate that he wanted to come on board and add to the continually evolving and dynamic skill set that we have to offer our A|E|C partners,” says Jim Begley, co-founder of TERPconsulting.

Prior to joining TERPconsulting, Rob served as the State of Colorado’s Chief Fire Code Official for 10 years. He was responsible for the adoption, implementation, and enforcement of the State’s adopted fire and life safety codes at the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention & Control.

“Formerly the lead fire and life safety code official in the State of Colorado, acting on behalf of both the state and the federal governments, I have an extensive knowledge base of the intricacies of the integration of the NFPA 101 — Life Safety Code and the NFPA 99 — Healthcare Facilities Codes with the International Code Councils’ promulgated fire and building code sets,” explains Rob of his background.

Also, under Rob’s purview as Colorado’s Chief Fire Code Official, he served as the Life Safety Code program manager and Primary Life Safety Code Official for the State’s Fire and Life Safety Code participation in the federal government’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) contract with the State of Colorado. This role included surveying CMS-certified health facilities for compliance with federal- and state-adopted fire codes and life safety codes.

“I served as one of five national faculty to develop and teach the Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)’s NFPA 99, 101, and 101A classes which are used to teach every federal and state inspector how to inspect healthcare facilities for compliance with the Life Safety Codes and the Healthcare Facilities Codes,” details Rob of his background in healthcare.

While at the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention & Control Rob led the creation, writing, promulgation, and implementation of the Division’s rules for fire suppression systems, schools, healthcare facilities, waste tire facilities, reduced ignition propensity cigarettes, casinos, and fireworks.

“After 15 years working with most of the national fire and life safety protection firms from around the country, I was well familiar with the corporate culture at TERPconsulting and its focus on leadership in developing fire and life safety protection strategies that are balanced with a keen sense of partnership with its clients. This culture of nurturing partnership in safety is a perfect fit with my skill set and desire to continue to ensure the well-being of the occupants of projects we work on,” Rob explained of his decision to join the TERPconsulting team.

Holding myriad state and national certifications, Rob is a Certified Fire Protection Specialist, Fire Inspector, Fire Plans Examiner, Executive Fire Officer, and Certified Fire and Explosion Investigation Instructor. In the firefighting realm, he holds multiple state and national firefighting credentials, is FEMA-certified in Emergency Management, and served as national faculty for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid in fire and life safety.

Rob has served on various National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code and standard committees including NFPA 80, NFPA 105 – Fire Doors and Windows, NFPA 99, NFPA 99B – Health Care Facilities, NFPA 99 – Fundamentals of Health Care Facilities, and NFPA 420 – Fire Protection of Cannabis Growing and Processing Facilities.

His professional affiliations include membership in the American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA), Colorado Fire Protection Association (CFPA), International Association of Fire Marshals (IAFM), International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), International Code Council (ICC), National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI), National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA), Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), Emergency Medical Association of Colorado (EMSAC), and Fire Marshal’s Association of Colorado (FMAC).

In addition to possessing a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Colorado State University, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado, Rob graduated from the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer (EFO) Program in 2019. Rob was named “Fire Investigator of the Year” for 2020 by the Colorado Association of Arson Investigators.
