TERPconsulting is pleased to announce that Matt Lescher, CASp, RAS, APAC-BE, Director of Accessibility, and Kirk Money, RAS, Senior Accessibility Consultant, have been selected to co-present at the 14th Annual CEU Seminar hosted by the Nevada State Board of Architecture, Interior Design and Residential Design (NSBAIDRD) and AIA Nevada. Their virtual presentation, Avoiding Common Accessibility Mistakes, will take place Friday, November 6, from 12:45 to 2:45 p.m. via Zoom.

“Accessibility compliance is about more than checking boxes or meeting minimum requirements. It’s about understanding how people interact with the built environment and recognizing how seemingly small design oversights can create significant barriers,” said Matt. “By examining common mistakes through real-world examples, we want to help design professionals identify potential issues early, make informed decisions, and create spaces that are accessible and usable for everyone.”

During this two-hour session, Matt and Kirk will explore frequent accessibility errors and challenges encountered in the design of buildings and surrounding site features. The presentation will include an overview of the 2010 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Standards for Accessible Design, along with applicable state codes and regulations. The presenters will also discuss the potential consequences of noncompliance, including relevant statistics and litigation.

Using case studies, photographs, and plan drawings, Matt and Kirk will illustrate common accessibility pitfalls and share strategies for avoiding them. Topics will include restroom design, protruding objects, accessible routes, detectable warnings, and ramps. Attendees will gain practical insights into recognizing these issues and applying accessibility requirements more effectively throughout the design process.
