Founded in 2010, TERPconsulting is a fire protection engineering and code consulting firm headquartered in Las Vegas, with regional offices in Denver, Los Angeles, New York City, and Phoenix. Our Arizona team comprised of three licensed FPEs specializes in integrating fire protection and life safety features into building designs, ensuring that aesthetics, functionality, and cost considerations are harmoniously balanced with building and fire code requirements.

James Frater, PE, CFM, CBO, a seasoned fire protection engineer and esteemed industry expert with nearly three decades of experience, manages TERPconsulting’s Arizona operations. In his role of regional director, James brings a wealth of expertise in fire protection engineering, code consulting, and extensive tenure as an Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Holding key positions such as Assistant Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, and Fire Protection Engineer throughout his career, James’ comprehensive background encompasses a spectrum of fire prevention disciplines, including building and fire code consulting, design of fire protection systems, management of hazardous materials, oversight of high-piled combustible storage, and optimization of fire department apparatus access and water supply.

James’s proficiency in the fire protection engineering arena extends to the development and approval of innovative and tailored alternate fire protection and code solutions across diverse occupancies and industries. As a registered fire protection professional engineer (PE) in Arizona, coupled with certifications from the International Code Council (ICC) as a Fire Marshal, Building Official, Fire Code Official, Building Plans Examiner, Fire Plans Examiner, Fire Inspector I, Fire Inspector II, and Fire Code Specialist, James exemplifies TERPconsulting’s commitment to excellence and regulatory compliance.
